Drilling into a wall and fitting a wall plug
FIY 1

Masonry

A shelf, a mirror, a TV bracket. You own the drill and still will not put a hole in the wall, because the last one crumbled and you had to hang a picture over it.

So it stays in the box, or somebody comes out for twenty minutes and charges you for the visit.

You will learn

  • Which drill to actually buy, and which one is wrong for your walls
  • Brick, concrete or partition board, and why that changes everything
  • Plastic plugs, wood dowels, hollow wall anchors and anchor bolts, and which holds a TV
  • Matching screw size to plug size to bit size

After it, you can

  • Hang heavy things on the right anchor, first time
  • Drill into brick or concrete without wrecking either
  • Patch the holes you already made, and paint over them
Wiring a three pin plug
FIY 2

Electricals

Half the house goes dark. You flip the breaker, it trips again, and you have no idea which thing did it.

One dead socket turns into an electrician's callout for a plug that cost three ringgit.

You will learn

  • Simple house wiring, with the fear taken out of it
  • How to find which breaker, and which appliance, knocked out the power
  • Rewiring a plug and redoing a socket or a switch
  • Swapping an E27 or a T5 to an LED downlight

After it, you can

  • Trace a trip to the thing that caused it
  • Replace your own plugs, sockets and switches
  • Change any lamp in the house
  • Tell Earth, Neutral and Live apart, and know when it may not matter
  • Know the jobs you should not touch
Repairing a cabinet hinge
FIY 3

Furniture repair

The drawer sticks. The hinge hangs. The screw spins forever and never bites, because the hole has given up.

So a solid cabinet gets thrown out over a hole the size of a pencil.

You will learn

  • Telling the five board materials apart, and why it decides the fix
  • Which glue holds on which material
  • Loose hinges, and the dowel trick for a stripped screw hole
  • Sandpaper grits, and what each one does to the wood

After it, you can

  • Fix a wobbly or broken joint instead of replacing furniture
  • Rehang a door that has dropped
  • Make a dead screw hole hold again
  • Screw into wood without splitting it
Changing a kitchen tap
FIY 4

Plumbing

The tap drips. There is a nut you cannot see, let alone reach, and the sink is full of things you have to move first.

A drip you live with for a year, or a callout for a part that costs less than lunch.

You will learn

  • Buying the right half inch fitting instead of guessing in the shop
  • Stopping a joint leak with PTFE tape, done properly
  • Changing a ceramic cartridge
  • Reaching the undermount nut, and clearing a trap

After it, you can

  • Change a tap yourself
  • Stop a leak at the joint
  • Clear a blocked trap without chemicals
  • Make the common household and garden connections yourself
A wall being painted
FIY 5

Painting

You painted a wall once. Nobody told you what undercoat, or what topcoat. It looked fine wet, and once it dried you could see every roller line and every brush edge from the doorway.

A weekend, the cost of the paint, and a wall you now notice every single day.

You will learn

  • Choosing paint and sheen for Malaysian weather
  • Prepping a wall inside and out, which is most of the result
  • Cutting in and rolling without leaving lines
  • The right solvent, and how to store and dispose of paint

After it, you can

  • Paint a room that looks done, not attempted
  • Prep a wall so the paint lasts
  • Repaint outside and have it survive the weather
  • Paint rusty metal or mouldy wood so it holds
Cleaning an air conditioner filter
FIY 6

Air con servicing

It smells. It is not as cold as it was. Somebody told you it needs gas and an antibacterial deep clean, and you believed them.

A service call every few months, and a gas top-up you very likely never needed.

You will learn

  • Washing the filters properly, not rinsing them
  • Opening the blower casing, which is where the smell lives
  • Cleaning fins by water spray only, and why anything else damages them
  • Cleaning the compressor outside

After it, you can

  • Service your own unit between professional visits
  • Get the cold back without paying for it
  • Know that a closed loop does not routinely need gas, so nobody sells you one again
  • Know what every mode on your remote is actually for
A door lock being changed
FIY 7

Doors

It squeaks. It sticks. It will not stay closed. It will not stay open. Or it will not lock, and that one keeps you up.

Every one of those gets lived with for years, because changing a lock looks like a job for somebody else.

You will learn

  • Fitting a safety latch, and the right bolt for each situation
  • Curing a squeak, a rattle and a sticky door
  • Replacing a cylindrical lockset or a deadbolt
  • Finding the screws when they are hidden

After it, you can

  • Change your own locks
  • Make a door close quietly and stay where you put it
  • Fit a latch to a child's room
  • Know why a front door, a toilet door and a door for an elderly person each want a different lockset
The inside of a toilet cistern
FIY 8

Toilet cistern and flush

It runs. All night. You jiggle the handle and it stops, until it does not.

Water you pay for, going straight down the drain, every hour of every day.

You will learn

  • The button, the flushing and the refill, and how they actually work
  • Naming the fault before you buy anything
  • Which of the five flush mechanisms you actually own
  • Buying the exact part size, not the nearly-right one
  • Fitting a seat, and which plunger is for which blockage

After it, you can

  • Stop a running cistern for the price of one part
  • Replace the mechanism yourself
  • Clear a blockage without panic
A home tool set
FIY 9

What is in my home toolbox?

You own a drill, a screwdriver that came free in a flat-pack box, and a hammer somebody left behind. Every job starts with twenty minutes of hunting for something that turns out to be the wrong size.

So you buy another one. Then another. The drawer fills with tools bought once, for one job, and never found again.

You will learn

  • What actually earns a place in a home toolbox, and what never gets used
  • Which few things to buy well, and which to buy cheap without regret
  • The handful of sizes that cover most of what goes wrong in a house
  • Storing it so you can find it in the dark, in a hurry
  • What a 100-piece set is really selling you

After it, you can

  • Buy one toolbox that covers most household jobs
  • Know what you already own and what you are actually missing
  • Stop buying the same thing three times

Screws, bolts and nuts
FIY 10

Fasteners

Screws, bolts, nuts, anchors, washers. You take the broken one to the shop in your palm, hold it up, and hope.

You come home with something that nearly fits. The job waits another week, and the nearly-right one joins the drawer.

You will learn

  • The families, and what each one is actually for
  • How a size is written, so you can ask for it out loud
  • Heads and drives, and why the wrong screwdriver ruins both
  • What holds in wood, in board, in brick and in concrete
  • Matching a fastener you already have, without the guesswork

After it, you can

  • Walk into a hardware shop and ask for the exact thing
  • Pick the right fastener for the material, not the one in the drawer
  • Know when a washer matters and when it does not

Sharpening a knife on a stone
FIY 11

Knife sharpening

Your kitchen knife slides off a tomato instead of cutting it. So you press harder, which is the exact moment a knife becomes dangerous.

A drawer of good knives nobody wants to use, and a replacement bought every year or so.

You will learn

  • Why the blunt knife is the dangerous one
  • Finding and holding the angle, which is the whole skill
  • Stones, pull-throughs and steels, and what each is really for
  • Feeling for the burr, and what it tells you
  • Honing between sharpenings, and which knives to leave alone

After it, you can

  • Bring a blunt kitchen knife properly back
  • Keep an edge instead of replacing the knife
  • Know which blades need somebody else

Sealant and adhesive
FIY 12

Adhesives and sealants

There is a whole shelf of tubes, and every one of them says fix all, super strong, works on everything. You pick one. It does not hold. Or it holds, and six months later the line around the bath has gone black and is peeling off in one piece.

So the same small job gets done three times, and you still could not say which tube was the right one.

You will learn

  • The actual difference between an adhesive and a sealant, and why one of them is meant to move
  • Silicone, polyurethane, hybrid, epoxy and superglue, and the job each is genuinely for
  • Caulk, grout and sealant, which get used as if they were the same thing and are not
  • What paintable and sanitary mean on a tube, and when either matters
  • Why a bathroom bead goes black, and what stops it
  • Preparing the surface, which decides most of the result
  • Running and tooling a bead that looks deliberate

After it, you can

  • Pick the right tube by reading it, not by the word on the front
  • Seal a sink or a bath so it stays clean and does not peel away
  • Glue two things and have them stay glued
  • Know when a screw beats any adhesive
